Permaculture Certification Program
Combining Ancient Wisdom With Modern Regenerative Agricultural Practices For Food Sovereignty.
Program Overview
Welcome to the Permaculture Certification Program at Hawaiian Sanctuary, where we combine ancient wisdom with modern regenerative agricultural practices to foster food sovereignty.
Our Legacy
Hawaiian Sanctuary began in 2005 as Mile Marker 12 Farms, a farm-to-table endeavor rooted in the rich soils of Hawaii. Our long-term vision is to empower students to carry the message of regenerative living out into the world. Our unique 44-acre sanctuary, designed by permaculture expert Tania Leilani, is a living example of harmonious design, where land and buildings are placed according to land energetics.
We operate on the principle of Aloha, seeing the divinity in everyone and everything. Nestled on the flanks of a live volcano, in a piece of old Hawaii, we offer a rare opportunity to reconnect with the land, ourselves, and each other.
Why Permaculture?
In a world increasingly dominated by environmental pollution, food deserts, and the loss of private farms, permaculture offers a path back to food sovereignty. By mimicking nature and applying the principles of regenerative agriculture, we can create systems that not only sustain but enhance the environment.
Permaculture is about giving people the tools to support themselves without relying on grocery stores and processed foods. It’s about putting more back into the earth than we take out. This is our responsibility to humanity—to support regenerative lifestyles on an expanding scale, for the sake of our children and future generations.
What You’ll Learn
Permaculture is more than just a farming method—it’s a comprehensive approach to designing regenerative human habitats by integrating land, resources, people, and the environment. In our program, you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of:
- Design Principles: Learn how to design regenerative ecosystems that reflect the resilience of nature. You’ll explore zoning strategies, contouring land for water management, maximizing solar gain, and creating symbiotic relationships between plants and animals.
- Tropical Permaculture: Understand the specific challenges and opportunities of tropical permaculture, including how to work with the unique climates, soil types, and biodiversity of our agricultural zone. (Hawaiian Sanctuary is located in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 11)
- Regenerative Agriculture: Master techniques in companion planting, agroforestry, and organic farming that enhance soil fertility and biodiversity.
- Animal Husbandry: Delve into ethical animal management with our bird sanctuary housing over 200 ground-dwelling birds and more than 60 egg-laying chickens.
- Community Living: Experience the challenges and rewards of living in a regenerative community. Develop the interpersonal skills needed to thrive in communal settings and lead others in regenerative lifestyles.
Prepare to Get Your Hands Dirty
This program will challenge you. Expect to dive into the mud—literally—and fully apply yourself to the rigorous demands of permaculture in a rainforest. From working under the hot tropical sun to planting in the rain and trudging through mud, you’ll be immersed in hands-on learning. This experience is as challenging as it is rewarding, requiring a deep commitment to the land and to the community you’ll be living in.
Challenges and Rewards of Community Living
Living with people in a regenerative community is both challenging and deeply rewarding. At Hawaiian Sanctuary, we prioritize open communication and mutual respect. Practicing the use of tools in Compassionate Communication and Ho’oponopono, we promote forgiveness and supportive relationships. These are skills that you carry with you far beyond the farm.
