Flying to Hawaii:

If you’re traveling from outside of Hawaii, you’ll first fly to one of the two major airports in Hawaii. The airport options are:

  • Hilo International Airport (ITO) – Approx. 30 minutes from Hawaiian Sanctuary. Located in Hilo, Hawaii, ITO is the closest airport to Pahoa and the Hawaiian Sanctuary Eco Retreat Center.
  • Kona International Airport (KOA), – Approx. 2 hours from Hawaiian Sanctuary. Located in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, KOA is on the west side of the Big Island. While significantly farther from Pahoa, KOA may offer more flight options.

Transport from Hilo International Airport (ITO) to Hawaiian Sanctuary Eco Retreat Center:

  • By Rental Car: Renting a car from Priceline or Turo is a great transportation option (Local Tip: Get a 4 wheel drive if you’d like to go up Mauna Kea Mountain! i.e. Jeep, Toyota Land Cruiser).
  • Lyft/Uber: Rideshare apps are typically a better price than taking a taxi. Expect to pay between $30-$80 from Hilo Airport (Local Tip: wait 30 minutes after arriving at the airport and prices often drop!).
  • By Bus: Public transportation options on the Big Island are somewhat limited, but you are able to take a bus from Hilo to Pahoa and then take an Lyft/Uber from Pahoa to Hawaiian Sanctuary.
  • Driving directions: From Hilo International Airport, take Highway 11 south towards Pahoa. Then, take Highway 130 east towards Pahoa/Kalapana. Follow Highway 130 until you reach Pahoa. Hawaiian Sanctuary is located a half mile past the Old Pahoa Rd intersection on Highway 130.
