Lei A’i & Lei Po’o with Leimaking Demonstration by AuntyAnnie Kaaukai
Annie Kaaukai was born and raised in lower Puna. “Aunty Annie,” as she is known to many in Puna, is 73 years old and has three children and five grandchildren. She has been volunteering with the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) for twenty-seven years, and started volunteering with the Food Basket in Hilo two years ago, distributing food in Nanawale, Pahoa, and Hawaiian Beaches. She also volunteers with the Senior Produce and the Senior Brown Bag distribution programs. We are privileged to have her share “mo’olelo” (stories) and the parts and uses of the Lauhala Tree as well as the plants & flowers used in Lei Making.
